What is Coffee-loading
Have you ever heard of coffee-loading? Also known as caffeine-loading, this is when you “load” your body with caffeine rather than food, to suppress your appetite. This can happen intentionally or unintentionally, but it’s definitely something to be aware of!
Consuming caffeine on an empty stomach will NOT:
Damage or harm your stomach lining- it’s very strong.
Harm your digestive tract in any way
Damage OR boost your metabolism
Be the end of the world
Consuming caffeine regularly on an empty stomach CAN:
Increase your cortisol levels (your stress hormone) possibly increasing overall stress, heart rate and blood pressure. This is what makes you feel “jittery”. This also causes an imbalance in your hormones in general which can become a larger problem.
Increase your stomach acidity, triggering acid reflux in some cases.
Cause nausea and bloating.
Spike your blood sugar, and impair your blood sugar control temporarily.
Lead to malnutrition if replaced as a meal habitually.
Bottom line: Caffeine isn’t inherently bad! However, make sure you aren’t replacing meals with caffeinated beverages in an attempt to eat less. Make sure you fuel your body properly, and enjoy your coffee with a snack!
